16 years after the release of the original Super Troopers movie, it’s successor, Super Troopers 2, is finally on the way.
Though far from a box office smash upon its initial release in 2001, Super Troopers went on to become a cult classic, finding legions of fans among college students and providing its creators, the Broken Lizard comedy group, with fame. The movie was not a critical or a box office smash, but that hasn’t stopped Super Troopers 2 going on to become one of the most coveted and highly anticipated sequels in years. Fans, then, will undoubtedly be beside themselves with joy to learn that the film they have been yearning for for nigh on 16 years has just taken another step closer to being released, after Broken Lizard announced that Super Troopers 2 has completed filming and post production. Indeed, reports Esquire, those fans are a considerable part of the reason that the film has been successfully made. According to the publication, Broken Lizard launched an Indiegogo crowd funding bid in 2015, with the goal of raising $2m – an amount that would partially fund the picture. Astonishingly, the campaign raised its target in just one day, writes Esquire, and went on to raise more than $4m. Director JayChandrasekhar was shocked by the level of support they received; “We travel around the country, and it’s the endless question on repeat, When are you making the sequel toSuper Troopers?’ he said. “But you don’t know if it’s 15 stoners running around asking you the question.” Kevin Heffernan, who played Rod Farva in the original movie, has been keeping fans updated with the progress of the movie for a little while now, and he has described the joy of finally being able to sit back and admire the group’s hard work; “We’ve been in post for the last 8 months, always looking at an unfinished product. “Now we get to watch the film in all its glory…. and that is an amazing feeling.” The official release date for the film remains unclear, though as fans have waited 16 years, a little bit more patience will hardly be beyond reason. As Heffernan says; “It’s painful to wait for this process because we’re dying to share this film with you, but each step takes us closer.” “Again, we could not have done this without you and we thank you for all of your help.” It is believed that Super Troopers 2 will reunite its original cast members and Broken Lizard group members, but will also feature some new stars. Deadline last year reported that Rob Lowe will feature in the movie as“Guy Le Franc, a former hockey player and the current mayor of a Quebec Canadian border town”. Though 16 years after its predecessor, and with many fans wondering if a sequel would ever indeed become a reality, largely due to those same fans, Super Troopers 2 is finally on the horizon.
